Gilwern u3A

There are a number of Universities of the Third Age (U3As) in the region and the newest ‘kid on the block’ is in Gilwern. The U3A movement is a unique and exciting organisation and is a great way to keep mentally and physically active in retirement and semi-retirement. Members, from all backgrounds, share their skills and life experiences to come together and learn together. There are no exams or qualifications just the pleasure of sharing learning in good company.

As a member of Gilwern U3A you are entitled to attend the monthly talks and join as few or as many of the Special Interest Groups/Special Activity Groups (SIGs and SAGs) as you want. Popular groups are Gardening and Gardens, Art, Family History, Walking and a Reading group. Proposed new groups are French Conversation and Science Matters – the choice is as varied as the members, so if you don’t see what you want then you create a new one!
Gilwern U3A is building an impressive programme of monthly talks for the 2017-18 season. Topics to be covered range from telepathy to the World of Chaucer and from Gardening to The Alps, so there is something for everyone.
A real coup for Gilwern U3A is a talk on 17th May by Kate Bliss on her career in antiques. Kate is well-known from her television appearances on Flog It and Bargain Hunt and is a jewellery and silver expert, so members expect some interesting tips and humourous anecdotes.
Gilwern U3A’s first AGM was held in the Gilwern Community Centre on Wednesday, 26th April with the addition of an illustrated talk entitled “The Fair Land of Gwent” by Chris Barber, the local well-known historian and photographer.
We are a very friendly organisation that welcomes new members so for further information please visit our website www.gilwernu3a.org.uk or contact oldrectorybarn@hotmail.co.uk
