London Marathon Charity Fundraising for St David’s Hospice Care

Like many of us, I have watched the footage of London Marathon since I can remember and have always wondered why anyone would wish to put themselves through the sheer exhaustion of completing 26.2 miles.

There are many reasons for this, which include the desire to race and be the first over that magical line, but for thousands who enter this phenomenal event, it’s an opportunity to raise the profile of many charities who work tirelessly to help those in need.

On the 12th October 2017, I received an email from St David’s Hospice Care confirming that I had secured a place to run on their behalf for London 2018 and I was excited and suddenly nervous at the same time!

I had approached the charity back in May to enquire about potential places after I realised that the public ballot had closed although I now understand that the ballot process is much like the national lottery in terms of being allocated a coveted place at random.

So, I am running my first ever Marathon in memory of my inspirational Uncle Vernon, who sadly passed in April 2017 after a long battle with his cancer illness. It meant so much to my aunt and our family to have the care and support of St David’s Hospice to enable him to have his wish of spending his last days at home, surrounded by his family.  St David’s Hospice staff makes this incredibly difficult period for families so dignified and personal and we will be eternally grateful to them.

St David’s Hospice Care has been providing community based hospice care for people with cancer or other life-threatening illness and their families since 1979 and care is provided to people living in many areas of South Wales including Monmouthshire and South Powys.  In addition to their 4 teams of clinical nurse specialists, support also includes a family support team; welfare rights advisers; bereavement support, children’s support worker and complementary therapists.

High levels of care also require significant finances and I am therefore asking potential sponsors to assist me in raising as much as possible for this fantastic cause which provides heart-felt support for all affected by life-threatening illness.  Wave if you see me running around!
