Christmas Charity Appeals

December 12th, 2017

It’s heartwarming to know that there are so many people willing to do so much for those in need this Christmas. Take some time to give something extra this year, whether that be your time, a few spare coins, a gift or a bigger donation to one of the charities or organisations running Christmas appeals. It doesn’t take much effort, but do make sure you check deadline dates for donations. The Focus is delighted to feature the following appeals.

Blue Cross
Sick, injured and homeless pets have relied on Blue Cross since 1897. Abandoned and unwanted or ill pets rely on us every year and with your help and support our doors will always be open for them. Our vision is that every pet will enjoy a healthy life and happy home. We care for 40000 pets every year and there are many more out there that still desperately need our help. By 2020 we want to be helping 70000 pets per year and your support will help us to make sure this happens. This year, we have opened a rehoming centre in Newport and we also have a centre in Usk College for cats. This festive season we have launched a Christmas Appeal asking for donations of toys/treats/chews etc for the animals at these centres. If you wish to donate to our appeal then please bring your donation to our shop at 1 Frogmore Street, Abergavenny. May we also take this opportunity to wish our loyal and new customers a very Merry Christmas and thankyou for all your support this year .

Umbrella Appeal
The Umbrella Appeal Children’s Centre Trust Charity supports the Children’s Centre based at Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny. The Children’s Centre Trust takes a holistic approach to improving the lives of children/young people (aged 0-18 years old) each year with a disability and/or developmental difficulty, living in North Monmouthshire, Blaenau Gwent and North Torfaen. We do this by providing educational, leisure and family facilities. Children/families attend the Children’s Centre each week for a whole range of treatment and therapy. We ensure the child/young person has opportunities for improving skills, preparation for transition, sport, etc. The Children’s Centre Trust aims to give these children, facing multiple disadvantage, the tools and confidence to be able to reach their full potential. This year we are undertaking toy appeals in order to give new toys to families who are in need over the Christmas period. If you would like to donate a new toy to our toy appeal there is a designated area within Abergavenny market hall until December 10th. If any more information is needed please contact Lorraine.jenkins2@wales.nhs.uk

ICE-CREAM appeal
Christopher Copner, eponymous owner of the Abergavenny and district ice-cream van – C.J Copner, has in recent weeks been running a Christmas appeal in exchange for free ice cream! In support of Govilon Baptist Church’s Christmas Charity Box Appeal, Chris has been carrying empty shoe boxes around with him on his travels in his ice-cream van, asking customers to take an empty box and fill it with goodies. Once a customer returns the box, Chris gives them a free ice-cream by way of thanks and drops it off to the Baptist Church for them. Chris has had a great response to the appeal, and although the official handover date has now passed, the appeal runs all year round, meaning that as long as your box is not filled with dated items, they can be collected for the Christmas appeal in 2018, and stored safely until then. Keep your eyes peeled for the C.J Copner van around town and be sure to ask for an empty box if you do. Simply fill it and return it for your free ice-cream. If you’re unable to fill an entire box, then don’t worry, one item is fine…Chris is happy to collect individual items and fill boxes between now and the next appeal. And while you’re at it, be sure to support your local ice-cream van too, whatever the weather!
